  1. A VPN does not – and cannot – provide total end-to-end (aka. E2E) security. It merely encrypts the data packets between the client computer and the VPN server. The VPN server then decrypts the data packets and forwards them to the target computer, whether it be a peer computer or a server on the Internet. If the service or app being targeted does not provide full E2E encryption, then the communication remains unsecured.

    A VPN service provides for masking the true IP address of the client as assigned by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and client-to-VPN and VPN-to-client encryption. However, this is not a real deterrent for law enforcement as many VPN hosts are located outside of the United States of America and are all traffic to and from the servers is monitored by U.S. intelligence agencies. Any data maintained by the VPN services is either already being captured by U.S. agencies or can be obtained with a warrant.
